Hebl, Maynard George
Maynard George Hebl, 78, of Iowa City, passed away Sunday, June 23, 2013, near his home in a farm accident. Friends may greet the family from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 28, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. A time for the sharing of stories will begin promptly at 7 p.m. Friday. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, followed by graveside military rites at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Johnson County 4-H and Iowa City West High Booster Club.
Maynard was born in rural Johnson County on Sept. 2, 1934, son of Elmer and Mary (Kasper) Hebl. He graduated from University High School in 1952, served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1963 and married Betty Marie Scott on Oct. 25, 1956.
Maynard spent his entire adult life farming the family farm just west of Iowa City. He was active in a number of organizations including the Johnson County Cattleman's Association, Iowa Cattleman's Beef Quarters, Johnson County 4-H, Fair Board and Extension Council, 4th degree Knights of Columbus, St. Wenceslaus Parish Council, Union Township Trustee, founding member of the Iowa City Booster Club Pancake Day, Iowa City West Booster Club, was the first Honorary Captain of the Iowa City West Football team and Hills Town and Country.
Maynard was a true “cowboy” proudly sporting a cowboy hat both on and off the farm and loved tending to his Hereford cattle. He was especially proud of this pink cowboy hat he wore at the Iowa State Fair. Maynard was a die-hard Hawkeye and Iowa City West Trojan fan; where all of his children and many of his grandchildren attended. His hobbies included attending all of the events that his children and grandchildren were involved in which kept him quite busy! He also spent countless hours playing euchre and variety of other games with his family.
Maynard touched the lives of many. He will be deeply missed as a supportive husband and father, fun-loving and awesome grandfather, neighbor and friend - “Grandpa or Uncle Maynard” to all who knew him.
He is survived by his children, Lori (Jim) Wildman of Plymouth, Minn., Dennis (Lisa) Hebl of Iowa City, Kenneth (Carole Ann) Hebl of Oxford, Karen (Rick) Shemanski of Solon, Scott (Nancy) Hebl of Hills and Kevin (Robin) Hebl of Fayetteville, N.C.; grandchildren, Melanie (Nathan) Robe (great-grandchildren Cooper and Baby Robe on the way), Brittany (Sterling) Bronemann, Jamie Hebl, Sara, Carter and Sadie Hebl, Shelby and Kelsey Shemanski, Nicole and Tyler Hebl and Kyle, Ryan and Abigail Hebl; six brothers; three sisters; and numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
He was preceded in death by his father; mother; wife, Betty; and daughter, Marlys.
