Hasselbusch, Paul 'Pike'
Paul “Pike” Hasselbusch, 91, of Clarence, died Sunday, Oct. 23, 2011, at home, with his family at his side, after a brief illness. Funeral services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, at St. John's United Church of Christ, Clarence, with the Rev. David Mears officiating. Burial: St. John's Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Chapman Funeral Home in Clarence.
He was born Dec. 6, 1919, in Clarence, Iowa, the son of Paul and Pauline (Meier) Hasselbusch, and married Evelyn Oldorf of Stanwood in 1940. They made their home on the family farm where they raised their family, Allan and Mary Kay.
Pike was baptized and confirmed at St. John's United Church of Christ in Clarence. He attended country school for eight years and graduated in 1937 from Clarence High, where he was an outstanding athlete at baseball, basketball and track.
Pike was a lifelong member of St. John's Church, served on the church council, sang in the choir for many years, and, with Ev, were Junior High youth counselors. He served on the Clarence school board, Cedar County Cattleman's Association and was on the original board that formed and started the 3/30 Golf and Country Club in Lowden.
Pike and Ev enjoyed many years playing golf and made a great team, winning a few awards along the way. He especially enjoyed his time working with the kids' golf program at the club. They spent many winters vacationing in Arizona. Pike enjoyed spending time with family, playing cards with his buddies, the Hawkeyes and the Cubbies.
Survivors include a son, Allan and friend Janann of Clarence; a daughter, Mary Kay and husband Gary Hamilton of Clarence; two sisters-in-law, Jean Oldorf and Marie Hasselbusch; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nephews, nieces and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and three brothers, Melvin, Arlo and Elwood.
