HARVEY LEROY LANDT
Cedar Rapids
It is with great sadness that we share news of the passing of Harvey LeRoy Landt on Sunday, March 7, 2021, at Cottage Grove Place in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Harvey, age 84 years and 360 days, of Cedar Rapids, stoically battled interstitial lung disease for several years.
Born on March 12, 1936, on a farm south of Luana, Iowa, Harvey was the son of Harvey E. and Mayme L. (Henderson) Landt. Relatives called him LeRoy, while Cedar Rapids friends and coworkers knew him as Harvey.
After attending one-room, rural Luana school through eighth grade, Harvey graduated from Luana High School in 1954. He went on to earn his B.S. in electrical engineering from Milwaukee School of Engineering in 1958. He then built a long, distinguished career at Collins Radio/Rockwell Collins, where he developed multicoupler systems for government radios and obtained seven patents on innovative radio technologies. While at Collins, he completed his M.S. in electrical wngineering at the University of Iowa. One of his achievements at Rockwell Collins was receiving the prestigious Engineer of the Year award in 1975. Harvey worked at Collins for over 42 years, from 1958 until he retired in 2001.
On May 14, 1961, Harvey was united in marriage to Judy Barr at St. John's Lutheran Church in Luana, Iowa. One son, Winston, was born to this union.
Harvey was a kind, generous, brilliant, hard-working man of many talents, excelling at every task he performed. He designed and drafted his family's home and, being a skilled wood worker, he built much of their furniture. He constructed precise scale models of several historic ships, including the USS Constitution, searching out parts before the convenience of the Internet, down to the last detailed cannonball. Harvey displayed his cooking and baking skills at family holidays, when he always included his butterscotch cream pie, along with a half-dozen other surprise contributions.
Had you visited Harvey's house you would have seen libraries neatly stacked with collections of books, a theater filled with movies, an electronics lab, a wood working shop full of tools, and an artist's craft area fitted for painting and miniature ship building, all meticulously organized and perfectly outfitted with task-specific furniture custom-built by Harvey.
Harvey was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, Harry and Grace Barr; sister-in-law, Martha Landt; sister-in-law, Cindy Barr; nephew, Dallas Landt; eight aunts; and eight uncles.
He is survived by his wife, Judy; and son, Winston of Cedar Rapids; brother, Wayne Landt (Peggy Flath) of Luana, Iowa; brother, Don Landt (Dorothy) of Palo, Iowa; brother-in-law, Conrad Barr of Waukon, Iowa; nieces, Laurie Landt and Jessi Middaugh (Clinton); nephews, Travis Landt (Sheri) and Karl Landt; and many extended relatives.
Per Harvey's wishes there will be no services, but his loving family will cherish his memory as the most wonderful, caring husband, son, brother, uncle and cousin. We miss him dearly.
