John W. Hartwig, 76, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, April 10, 2011, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, April 14, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Jonathan Offt. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and one hour before the service at the church. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth; children, James (Therese) Hartwig of Olin, Louise Riggs of Maquoketa, Norman Hartwig of Cedar Rapids, David Hartwig of Cedar Rapids, Marsha (Ron) Jacobs of West Liberty, Senior Master Sergeant Rodney Hartwig of Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma City, Okla., Patty Hartwig of Marion, Donald (Nancy) Hartwig of Marion, Lonny Hartwig of Cedar Rapids, Marsha Hampton of Katy, Texas, Norma Jones of Marion, Phillip (Koren) Jones of Cedar Rapids, Tracy Ashley of Marion and Mark (Jenny) Hocken of Rochester, Minn.; and many grandchildren.

Also surviving are siblings, DeLite (John) Good of Anamosa, JoAnn (Jerry) Ferrie of Cedar Rapids, June (John) Miller of Cedar Rapids, James (Corrine) Hartwig of Mesa, Ariz., Charles (Carol) Hartwig of Cedar Rapids and Catherine McConchie of Aurora, Colo.; sisters-in-law, Jeanne Hartwig of Anamosa and Linda Hartwig of Sun Prairie, Wis.; brother-in-law, Leonard Joslin of Fairview; daughter-in-law, Diane Hartwig of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Richard Hartwig, Robert (Doris) Hartwig, Albert “Buzzy” Hartwig and Keith Hartwig; and sisters, Rhoda Mishler and Sarah Joslin.

Born April 21, 1934, in Anamosa, Iowa, John was the son of Otto and Doris (Strickell) Hartwig. John served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. On May 5, 1990, he was united in marriage to Ruth (Meyer) Hocken at Fairview Baptist Church. Growing up, John helped on the family farm. Later he worked for Professional Chemist, Wilson Packing and B & H Tank, retiring in 1991.

John enjoyed bowling, fishing, camping, mushroom hunting and tending his veggie garden. Other joys were building bird feeders as well as feeding the birds and squirrels.
