Hartgrave, Mildred 'Jean' Walsh Trcka
Mildred “Jean” Walsh Trcka Hartgrave, 74, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013, at her home following a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at Teahen Funeral Home by the Rev. Stasia Fine. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and after 10 a.m. Thursday.
Jean is survived by her husband, David; three daughters, Stacey (Jeff) Costillo of Fort Worth, Texas, Marna Trcka of Cedar Rapids and Molly (Cuong) Nguyen of Kissimmee, Fla.; three sons, Daniel, Douglas and Dennis (Tammy) Hartgrave, all of Cedar Rapids; a brother, Charles (Marylin) Walsh of Cedar Rapids; and seven grandchildren, Sarah (Robert) Rosales of Fort Worth, Texas, Joseph Brown of Fort Worth, Texas, Jordan (Brandy) Trcka-Saikaly of Cedar Rapids, Luke Kaegbein of Cedar Rapids, Colleen Nguyen of Cedar Rapids, Alex Nguyen of Kissimmee, Fla., and Megan (Justin) Maring and Casey, both of Cedar Rapids.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Aaron Trcka; a brother, William Walsh; and a sister, Beverly Truesedale.
Jean was born Jan. 20, 1939, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Charles and Esther Mae Flood Walsh. She married David Dean Hartgrave on July 9, 1973, in Cedar Rapids. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science and Masters in Social Work from the University of Iowa and graduated with a Ph.D. in Psychology from the Colorado School of Mines in Colorado. She worked as a social worker in various capacities throughout the years, served on the Foster Care Review Board and was founder of Parents Anonymous. She was a member of New Disciples Church and a former member of First Christian Church.
Jean was very proud of her Irish heritage and was fond of saying, I did it my way.
Memorials may be directed to St. Luke's Hospice or Alzheimer Association.
