Harris, John 'Jack' Delbert
John “Jack” Delbert Harris, 73, of Iowa City, formerly of Center Point, died Sunday, May 27, 2012, at his home. Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 31, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Walker, by Father Ardel Barta. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Center Point, where a vigil service will be held at 6 p.m. Burial: Sacred Heart Cemetery, Walker, Iowa.
Survivors include his nine children, Rita (Kyle) Milroy, Roxanne (Brad) Sauer, Jackie Toms, Rick (Tammi Wood) Harris, Ron (Jamie) Harris, Jody (Randy) Winch, John (Denise) Harris Jr., Janet (Manny) Tejada and Jeri Harris; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Lucille Walter; brother, Thomas Harris; and many nieces and nephews.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Judy; nine brothers and sisters; and his favorite Arabian horse, Baskgat.
Born June 10, 1938, in Iowa City, Iowa, Jack was the son of John and Mary Jane (VanDee) Harris. On April 23, 1960, in Winthrop, Iowa, he was united in marriage to Judy Shaffer. She died Sept. 18, 2004. Jack farmed in Delaware County for many years.
Jack enjoyed his grandchildren, the Iowa Hawkeyes, WWE wrestling and other sports. He raised Arabian horses for many years and enjoyed them throughout his life.
A memorial fund has been established for cancer research in memory of Jack and Judy Harris.
