Harrington, Robert J. 'Bob'
Robert J. “Bob” Harrington, 68, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011, at his home following a long illness. Funeral Mass: 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 23, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, by Father Christopher Podhajsky. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion, where a vigil service will begin at 6 p.m. There also will be visitation on Friday one hour before the service at the church. Burial: Campbell Cemetery, Bertram.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Nancy; six children, Debra Moen-Larson of Alabama, Denise Moen of Cedar Rapids, Darwin (Maria) Moen of Michigan, Dan Moen of Cedar Rapids, Dianne (Dave) Lerch of Martelle and Duane Harrington of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Sean (Amanda) Larson, Casey (Lindsey) Larson, Katie and Cameron Jones, Frank and Nick Moen, Melissa and DJ Moen, Ashley (Steve) Brickley and Reilly Harrington; three great-grandchildren; his sister, Marilyn (Larry) Aspleaf of Cedar Rapids; sister-in-law, Carol Harrington of Cedar Rapids; half sister, Kathleen Farkas of Alaska; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Jerry.
Bob was born Nov. 3, 1942, in Ryan, Iowa, to Gerald and Rosalyn (Hughes) Harrington. He grew up in Cedar Rapids and graduated from Regis High School. He was a letter carrier for 35 years until his retirement in 2001. For 10 years he also was owner/operator of Nancy's Country Inn, where he was affectionately known as “Taco Bob.” Bob was a lifelong member of Immaculate Conception Church. He was also a member of Knights of Columbus No. 909 and the SaPaDaPaSo. He loved the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Cubs, Iowa Hawkeyes and NASCAR racing.
Bob was a simple man with simple pleasures. His greatest pleasures were his family, sitting on the deck watching the birds at home on Berry Road, and having beers in the basement.
He will be remembered for his quick wit and sometimes relentless teasing.
