HAROLD THOMPSON
Newhall
Harold Thompson, 91, of Newhall, Iowa, went to meet his Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, May 10, 2018. He was born Sept. 30, 1926, to Oren and Mae (Rieke) Thompson near Van Horne, Iowa. He graduated from Van Horne High School in 1944 and entered the Great Lakes Naval Training Station that same year. He was serving as a naval quartermaster on Landing Ship Tank 387 as WWII was ending. He returned to the farm and married Kathleen Lauterwasser on Sept. 11, 1949. In addition to farming and family, he served in many positions at his church and in the community. Harold will be remembered for his generosity and a willingness to help and serve others, as well as a love for woodworking, sports of all kinds, card games, and cheering on the Chicago Cubs.
In addition to Kate, his loving wife of 68 years, he is survived by his nine children: Sue (Dave) Drugg, Apple Valley, Minn., Steve (Patti) Thompson, Van Horne, Sandy (Dave) Glienke, Houston, Texas, Shari (Marc) Moeller, Mount Pleasant, Scott (Becky) Thompson, Newhall, Stella (Calvin) Wolter, Newhall, Shirley (Dick) Paul, Iowa City, Sally (John) York, Nashville, Tenn., and Sara (Gary Osborne) Thompson, Des Moines; 25 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his brother, Glen (Marj), Fort Dodge; sister-in-law, Rozella Lauterwasser, Cedar Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.
He loved and was loved by his grandchildren, Jeff, Matt, Jason, Kim, Chris, Josie, Lynn, Kevin, Jill, Tyler, Lisa, Andrew, Hannah, Nick, Jake, Timothy, Erik, Kelly, Emily, Natalie, Erin and Michelle; his stepgrand-children, Jessica, Abby and Jake; and his 22 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Marlyn; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Mary Jane Thompson, Lewis Lauterwasser, Kenneth Lauterwasser and Colleen Lauterwasser.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, May 13, 2018, at St. John Lutheran Church, Newhall.
Funeral service: 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 14, 2018, at St. John Lutheran Church, Newhall, with the Rev. Steven Rempfer officiating.
Interment: St. John Lutheran Cemetery, Newhall, with full military rites.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John Lutheran Church, Central Lutheran School or Mission Central in Mapleton, Iowa.
