HAROLD SHERMAN
Robins
Harold Sherman, 88, of Robins, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2017, at the Hiawatha Care Center.
Harold was born Dec. 23, 1928, in Robins, Iowa, to Emery and Mabel Sherman. After a brief time, his family moved to a farm north of Alburnett, where Harold graduated high school. Harold enlisted in the Army during World War II and was stationed in Austria/Germany. He then was sent to Korea and served in the Korean War. Returning home, he married Marcia Frentress at the Robins Church of the Brethren on Dec. 5, 1952, where they were lifelong members. Marcia died in March 2009, and Harold remained devoted to her until his last breath.
Harold, with the help of his father, Emery, father-in-law, Amos Frentress, brothers, Bill and Marvin, and brother-in-law, Howard Matheny, built the house they lived in. Harold and Marcia raised three children, Sherry (Mike) Buske, Fort Dodge, Iowa, Beverly (Bruce Penning), Robins, and Don (Julie) Sherman, Robins. They have three grandchildren, Scott Snedden (Traci) Bellevue, Iowa, Brooke Sherman, Robins, and Sammy Sherman, Ames, Iowa.
Harold always had a saying "family togetherness." He loved visiting his parents every Sunday, going to church, Sunday dinners and drives. He loved volunteering at the Alburnett Historical Society, family fishing trips and taking road trips to visit his siblings. He also loved working in the garden, husking sweet corn, digging potatoes, snapping peas, campfires and mushroom hunting. He loved watching his grandchildren grow up.
Harold was also a lifelong Mason. He worked at Century Engineering for many years until it closed. He also farmed over 60 acres of the Frentress farm, until a devastating car accident forced him to retire from that. He still managed to keep busy with his tractor, doing things around the farmland that remained. He was a master "tinkerer" and could build or fix anything. He also collected lots of "stuff" that might come in handy some day, and many times it did! In most recent years, Harold sold some of his land to become part owner of Emery Place, an assisted living facility in Robins, and was able to live there for a short period of time.
Harold loved his granddog "Stitch" with all his heart. They were the best of friends and shared a special bond.
Harold will be remembered as a selfless man for the way he cared for those he loved, from his devotion to his children and grandchildren, to his undying love for Marcia in sickness and in health.
He will be remembered as a skillful man for the way he used his hands and creative mind to build and fix almost anything. What most people saw as impossible to fix, he saw as an opportunity to learn.
He will be remembered as a humble man. Modest in how he lived, he never sought the need to have materialistic things in life. He appreciated everything, yet expected nothing.
While Harold would say that he was never a wealthy man, the lives of those he touched have been made richer because of him.
I'm sure God is happy to have a skilled handyman around, and Harold is happy to be home with Marcia and his granddog Stitch by his side.
There will be no public visitation/service. The family will have a private interment for his cremains at Cedar Memorial at a later date. Memorial donations may be made payable to Alburnett Historical Society, and sent to Sherry Buske, 1713 Madison Ave., Fort Dodge, IA 50501.
The family would like to thank the Hiawatha Care Center for their care and support.
