Harold E. Schenk, 95, of Hills, formerly of Iowa City and the surrounding area, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2017, at Atrium Village in Hills. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with burial to follow at Sharon (Grout) Cemetery, rural Johnson County. There will be an hour of visitation at the funeral home prior to the services and a time for cookies and ice cream (Harold's favorite) before leaving to go to the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Harold's memory to Sharon (Grout) Cemetery or Atrium Village. Online condolences may be sent for his family through the web at www.gayandciha.com.
Harold Earl Schenk was born Feb. 20, 1921, in rural Johnson County, Iowa, the son of Clarence and Ethel (Cline) Schenk. He attended schools in Kalona, graduating from Kalona High School with the class of 1941. On Jan. 11, 1947, he married Jean Marie Moss at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa City. For many years, the couple lived on and worked the family farm south of Iowa City until moving into town in 2001. Harold also worked for Great Lakes Pipeline for over 30 years while farming too! He was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church, Izaak Walton League and the Iowa City Barbershop Chorus.
His family includes numerous nieces and nephews on both his and Jean's side.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jean; son, Mark; sisters, Iona Hudachek, Hazel Bailey, Gladys Miller and Waneta Watkinson; and brother, Clair.
