Harold Reid Lorenz, 92, of Manchester, died Friday, March 4, 2016, at UnityPoint-Finley Hospital in Dubuque.
A funeral service will be 11 a.m. March 16 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 119 W. Fayette St., Manchester, where friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of service.
Gathering of family and friends will be 12:30 p.m. March 19 at Rash Gude Funeral Home, 1220 Main St., Hamburg, where a burial service will be at 1:30 p.m.
Harold was born May 25, 1923, in Minneapolis, Minn., the son of Harold Hans and Mamie (Reid) Lorenz. He graduated from Lyons Township High School in La Grange, Ill. He is a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, serving from 1943 until his honorable discharge on Nov. 29, 1945. Harold then received his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering in 1949 from the University of Iowa.
He married Floy Helwig, M.D., in January 1961 in Chicago. She preceded him in death. He later married Mary Ann Crocker, M.D., in July 1983 in Manchester.
He was a proud member of the Shriners, 33rd Degree Mason and Rotary club.
After a successful career at Amoco for 33 years, which included trips around the world to work, fish and hunt, Harold settled down in Iowa. The horse business and nature called Bill back home. Raising horses, chickens and various other animals gave him enormous pleasure. Flowers and vegetables winning fairs and horses with blue ribbons, offered him great fulfillment. As with everything he set his mind to, Bill saw success and enjoyment. His days were filled with traveling around to eat at various places and chat with friends. When his family visited, he shared with his grandchildren a world very different then their own. Always quick to give his opinion, he left a great legacy of the value of learning.
Bill enjoyed raising American Saddlebred horses. His pride and joy was his world champion horse, Majolica. He loved Airedales and life on the farm with the wildlife.
He was a loving husband, an awesome Pop to his three children and a caring and supportive grandpa.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Lorenz, M.D., of Manchester; three children, Victoria (Darrell) Lorenz Moxley of Houston, Texas, Will (Nicole) Lorenz of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., and Leslie (Lothar) Lorenz Schmid of Zurich, Switzerland; six grandchildren, Charis Lorenz, Elise Lorenz, Luca Schmid, Indiana Schmid, Andrew Moxley and Tyler Moxley; two sisters, Karen (John) Stanley of Kansas City, Kan., and Sharon Heller of Dubuque; and a cousin, Corinne Greenwood of Hamburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Floy Helwig Lorenz, M.D.; and a sister, Patricia Chantry.
Memorials may be made to Mayo Clinic, Rochester Minn.; Common Grounds Coffee House or Grace United Methodist Church, Lamont.
The Lorenz family wishes to extend a special thank-you to Melissa Hutchinson and all of his wonderful caretakers; Robert McBane, M.D., from Mayo Clinic; Jane Hartnett, M.D., from Regional Medical Center; all the exceptional staff and physicians at Finley Hospital; and Joyce Geistkemper.
