Harold Burnette Hixson, 96, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on Sept. 18, 2023, at Westridge Care Center. He was born on April 15, 1927, in Hillsboro, Iowa, to Hiram and Minnie Hixson, the family moved to Cedar Rapids shortly thereafter.
In 1947, Harold married Claudine Kent the love of his life and they shared a great life together, Harold would never hesitate to tell you the story of how they met and that it was love at first sight. They were married 69 years when Claudine passed. Harold graduated from Wilson High School and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After returning home from the war, he worked at Cherry Burrell and Collins Radio before retiring from American College Testing Program. He was very active in the Scouting program, both the Boy Scouts and the Sea Scouts. He and Claudine were founding members of the Cedar Rapids Emmaus Community and they went on to start up three more Emmaus Communities throughout the Midwest. Harold helped start up the On Call Chaplaincy program at UnityPoint Health-St. Luke’s hospital where he volunteered for 27 years.
Harold is survived by his children, Vicki (Bill) Funke of Byron, Ill., and Mark (Lori) of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, John Hixson and Aaron Hixson, Daniel Funke and Holly Funke, Brian Hixson, Kelly Kintzel and Harrison Hixson; three great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Robert Kent of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Hiram and Minnie; brothers, John, Harvey and Charles; daughter, Marcia; and son, Randy.
Harold and Claudine were long time members of Salem Church and Grace Street Church.
Visitation will be at Teahen Funeral Home from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24, with a Celebration of Life service at 5 p.m. Pastor Terry Van Wyk officiating. A private graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 25, with military honors at Cedar Memorial Cemetery, Pastor Mark Hixson officiating.
