Harlan was born November 21, 1941, in Osage, Iowa and graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1959. He married Arlys (Tesch) Hannam on February 10, 1962. Harlan’s early career in St. Ansgar included driving a fuel oil truck for the Co-op Oil Company and working for Grain Millers. Harlan and Arlys moved to Coralville in 1984, where he held various positions, including his time owning the local Baskin Robbins store and The Cookie Jar at Sycamore Mall. To stay active, he delivered for the Hy-Vee Bakery until his retirement. He was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church, where he served many years as treasurer.
Harlan adored their many cats, leaving behind “Callie.” He enjoyed the open road and outdoors, whether snowmobiling, camping, riding motorcycle, participating in tractor rides, taking train trips, or fishing. He enjoyed many hobbies through the years including antiquing, playing cards, reading, and watching Iowa Hawkeye sports.
Harlan is survived by his wife of 63 years, Arlys; two daughters, Marilyn (Randy) Pinney of Owasso, OK, and Kristine (Jerry) Barksdale of Zionsville, IN; four grandchildren, Tom (Julia) Welborn of Divide, CO, Annie (Jaret) Perkins of Oklahoma City, OK, Ethan Barksdale and Carlin Barksdale, both of Zionsville, IN; one great-grandson, Griffin Welborn; and many nephews and nieces who knew him as Uncle “Butch.”
Harlan was preceded in death by his parents, Lavina (Beyer) and Herbert Hannam, one sister, Darlene (Hannam) Anderson, and three brothers, Herb, Duane “Nick,” and Eugene “Bud” Hannam.
Many thanks to the Coralville Police Department, and staff at the University of Iowa Rehab Center and Iowa City Rehab and Health Care for their support these past weeks. Take time to enjoy a scoop of ice cream or a long drive in Harlan’s memory.
