Richard was born Dec. 28, 1956, in Monticello, Calif., the son of Richard and Twila. He graduated from Polytechnic High School in Pacoima, Calif. He married Dorothy “Dottie” Courtney on March 22, 1975, in Van Nuys, Calif.
Richard led a very fulfilling and vibrant life. Passionate in almost everything he did, he never failed to touch the lives of those around him. His lifelong occupation was that of a toolmaker, though he was so much more than that. His cooking allowed him to share his passion for life with anyone fortunate enough to have tasted his excellent culinary capabilities. His off beat, which some would consider “warped” sense of humor was able to make even the toughest cases crack into a smile. An avid fisherman and camper, Richard's idea of relaxation involved a tent, a grill and his fishing gear. Camping was a common occurrence with him, with a lot of family outings comprised of trips to the mountains and lakes. He lived for his family, especially his kids and grandkids and was a large part of all their lives.
Richard is survived by his wife, Dottie; his children, Ryan (Michelle) of North Liberty, Rob of Iowa City, Rich (Heather) of Iowa City, and Rachel (Mike) Scroggin of West Branch; sisters, Ruth (Stephen) Haws of Redding, Calif., Priscilla Hansen of Yreka, Calif., Mary (Ron) Johnston of Hillsboro, Ore., and Cheryl Zimmerman of Palm Springs, Calif.; and grandchildren, Bailey, Seth, Haley, Lilliana, Cadence, Elijah and Ryleigh - soon to arrive.
Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Janice Sigler.
