Hampton, Martha
Martha Hampton died June 13, 2012, in Indianola, Iowa. Her body was donated to Des Moines University for medical research. Interment of ashes will be at a late date in Whittier.
Martha Louise Graham, daughter of Chester and Margaret Graham, was born Nov. 18,1927, in Champaign, Ill. She lived most of her early life in Michigan and Wisconsin and graduated from William Penn College in 1950. She and Roy Hampton were married Sept. 1, 1949. After serving two years as volunteers with the American Friends Service Committee inrural Mexico and El Salvador, they returned to Iowa and for a short time were on the staff at Scattergood Friends School near West Branch. They enjoyed their 35 years living and working on their farm near Springville and raising five daughters. After retiring from the farm they lived in Mount Vernon, moving in 2001 to Wesley The Village Retirement Community in Indianola.
Martha was an active member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). She loved folk dancing, folk singing, traveling, meeting new friends and enjoying old friends, being of service to others and making all feel included. Lately her greatestjoy was watching her grandsons grow up and discover who they are.
Survivors include her husband, Roy of Indianola; five daughters, Carol (Dan) Moskowitz of Kensington, Md., Sarah Rutledge of Ottumwa, Alice Hampton (Gordy Bischoff) of EauClaire, Wis., Barbara (Dale) Garlinghouse of Marion and Ruth Hampton (Scott Hervey) of Decorah; siblings, Lois (Tony) Edgerton, Laurie Graham (Larry Wilson), Jean Graham and Jere Graham; and six grandsons, Ben and Adam Moskowitz, Kyle and Kevin Rutledge and Zachary and Joshua Garlinghouse.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Margaret Graham; stepmother, Viola Jo Graham; and three brothers, James, Frank and Donald.
A memorial service will be held at The Village in Indianola on June 25 at 2 p.m. and at the Whittier Friends Meeting House on Aug. 11 at 11 a.m., with lunch afterward.
