Hale, Ann Elizabeth (Young)

Ann Elizabeth (Young) Hale, 84, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, July 13, 2013, at St. Luke's Hospice, after suffering a stroke. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, 4200 First Ave. NE, Cedar Rapids, with fellowship and lunch to follow at the Family Center of Cedar Memorial. Inurnment will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.

Ann was born May 11, 1929, to John “Frank” Young Sr. and Marguerite Klinefelter Young of Mount Vernon, Iowa. She graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1947 as valedictorian of her class. She then attended Cornell College in Mount Vernon and graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1951 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism.

Ann married Grant Hale in 1954 in Mount Vernon. She designed and Grant built their home in Cedar Rapids and had a home at Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. Ann and Grant were also foster parents.

Ann attended the University of Iowa obtaining a Master of Education degree in 1966 and was a member of Phi Delta Kappa International. She became a high school English teacher at Shellsburg High School and then at Washington High School in Cedar Rapids where she taught English and Debate, becoming a favorite teacher of many students. She retired in 1991 and was then a substitute teacher at various high schools in Cedar Rapids. In 1996, she traveled to Ireland, her McManus ancestral home.

Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Grant in 1995; and a sister, Patricia Schloss in 2012.

She is survived by her brother, John (Sandy) Young Jr. of Cedar Rapids; brothers-in-law, Roger Schloss and Milton Hales; and sister-in-law, Darlene Pruett, all of Cedar Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.

Ann was a gregarious, highly intelligent, outgoing person who loved cats, traveling, and lively conversation with friends and family.

We thank the compassionate staff at Higley Mansion Care Center who made Higley truly a home for Ann in her final years.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Cedar Valley Humane Shelter in Cedar Rapids or to a charity of one's choice.
