Hafner, Larry A.
Larry A. Hafner, 60, of Iowa City, died peacefully on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at Briarwood Health Care Center following a courageous battle with brain cancer. Larry chose to donate his body to the University of Iowa Deeded Body program. A Memorial Service to celebrate Larry's life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at Zion Lutheran Church, 310 North Johnson St., Iowa City. Visitation will be at the church from 10 a.m. until service time.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Iowa City Public Library, the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center or to the Iowa State University Foundation.
Larry was born Dec. 16, 1952, in Muscatine, Iowa, the son of Byron Eugene “Gene” and Mary (Utter) Hafner. He grew up in Davenport and was a 1971 graduate of Davenport Central and a 1976 graduate of Iowa State University, with a B.S. degree in accounting. In 1981, Larry married Lyn Hoversten in Webster City, Iowa. Larry worked for Iowa State University, John Deere Plow Planter and NCS and held various positions in both accounting and software development.
Larry enjoyed running, backpacking, listening to music, reading and computers, and most importantly, he enjoyed spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Lyn of Iowa City, and their three daughters, Mollie, Hayley and Carly; his five siblings, Donald (Beth) Hafner of Davenport, Carolyn (Dwight) Iles of West Branch, Linda Vogel of Bettendorf, Dan (Beth) Hafner of Bettendorf and Roger (Donna) Hafner of Bettendorf; and a large extended family.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents.
