Hackbarth, Craig E.
Craig E. Hackbarth, 64, died Sunday, April 10, 2011, at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton following a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 14, at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. Sixth St., Vinton, with the Rev. John Karrick officiating. Private committal services will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Craig was born Jan. 29, 1947, at Hampton, to Milton E. and Anne P. (Keepf) Hackbarth. He graduated from Iowa Falls High School and then attended Mechanics School in Des Moines. Craig served his nation in the Army National Guard from 1967 to 1971.
Craig farmed in the Iowa Falls area before beginning his 42-year career with Fareway stores. He became manager of the Vinton Fareway in 1989, serving until his retirement on July 18, 2009.
Craig married Judy K. Hinton. On Feb. 8, 1992, he was united in marriage to Brenda Freese at Vinton.
Craig was a member of the Vinton Country Club, Vinton Kiwanis Club, and Izaak Walton League of America.
In addition to his wife, Brenda, he is survived by his daughter, Robin (Patrick) Dorr of Belmond; his son, William (Bill) Hackbarth of Boone; his grandchildren, Skylar and her special friend, Kyle, Nicholas and Kassidy Dorr; his sister, Sharon Anderson of Independence; his brother, James ”Jim” (Judy) of Roseville, Calif.; the Freese family; a number of nieces and nephews; and his Fareway family.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Darreld.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Craig Hackbarth Scholarship Fund.
