Haas, LaVern
LaVern Haas, 87, of Hopkinton, died Sunday Oct. 2, 2011, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a brief illness. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, at St. Luke's Catholic Church, Hopkinton, with interment in the Hopkinton Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Hopkinton, where a parish Scripture service will be held at 7 p.m.

Surviving are three children, Wilma Haas, Hopkinton, Kathryn Hansen, Monticello, and Kenneth (Linda) Haas, Marion; eight grandchildren, Don, Michele, Pam, Kevin, Heather, Larry, Jason and Janette, 18 great-grandchildren; and her two dogs, Sparky and Brownie.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ivan on Sept. 29, 1996; and her daughter, Karen on Nov. 11, 2008.
LaVern Melchert was born Dec. 23, 1923, at Hopkinton, Iowa. She was the daughter of Peter and Katherine McElmeel Melchert. She graduated from the Hopkinton Iowa schools. LaVern Melchert and Ivan Haas were married Feb. 18, 1946, at St. Luke's Catholic Church. The couple farmed in the Hopkinton area. LaVern was also employed at Collins Radio and later worked at Ertl Toys in Dyersville. She was an avid Ohio State Fan. She liked to sew and do embroidery and work in her garden.
