Haaland, Verne H.
Verne H. Haaland, 91, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, June 17, 2013, in Oshkosh, Wis. Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids, by Deacon Paul Zimmerman. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to service time at the funeral home on Saturday. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military honors.
Mr. Haaland was born on a farm in Clay County, Iowa, on Feb. 9, 1922, to Thorvald and Florence Haaland. He was a graduate of Rossie High School in Clay County and attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1949, with a degree in civil engineering. He served as an officer in the U.S. Navy.
While in the Navy, Verne met Dorothy Turk at a USO dance in New York City. They were married March 20, 1946, at Old St. Mary's Church in San Francisco. He was a charter member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Oshkosh, Wis.; three daughters, Kristin (Bob) Riedel of Waukesha, Wis., Karen (Eric) Larson of Oshkosh and Monica Haaland of Eugene, Ore.; grandchildren, Natalie (Nate) Westphal, Pam Riedel and Eric Larson Jr.; great-grandchildren, Parker and Liam Larson; relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Thorvald and Helen Haaland and Russell and Verneta Haaland; and a nephew, John Haaland.
Mr. Haaland was employed in Ames, Marshalltown and West Union before joining the Howard R. Green Engineering Co. in Cedar Rapids. In 1969, he and an associate formed their own engineering company.
During their 67 years of marriage, Verne and Dorothy enjoyed dancing, traveling and sailing. Mr. Haaland, a quiet man, was a good sport, prodigious reader and possessed a special sense of humor. He enjoyed singing and for many years had been a member of the Cedar Rapids Harmony Hawks barbershop chorus. He loved fishing.
A week ago he told a daughter: “I'd like to do it all again.”
Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association or St. Pius X Catholic Church.
