Guy Murray Monroe, 92, passed away peacefully at Mercy Iowa City after a valiant fight with pneumonia on Feb. 19, 2016.
He was born Sept. 29, 1923, at the family farm on Highway 21 north of Elberon to Guy and Myrtle Monroe, the youngest of 11 children. Murray drove the Geneseo school bus during high school, where he graduated in 1942. He served in the Army in Japan in 1944-45. He and Darlene Pecenka were married in 1952 at the Methodist Church in Traer. He began farming and milking cows in Janesville, then Waterloo, and finally in rural Clutier. He and Darlene were together 61 years before she lost her fight with pancreatic cancer in 2013.
Murray is survived by his daughter, Becky, and her significant other, Mike (Palmer); the family dog, Misty; his sister-in-law, Dorothy Pecenka of Traer; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; five sisters and five brothers and their spouses; his faithful horse, Monroe; and his dog, Rusty.
Funeral services will be 12:30 p.m. Feb. 28 at Christ United Methodist Church in Belle Plaine, with burial following at Ridgewood Cemetery in North Liberty. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church and continue following burial at the cemetery at Becky and Mike's home in North Liberty beginning at 3 p.m.
