Mrs. Gurtrude Luter, 94, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Monday, Jan. 30, 2017, at Living Center West after a long illness. Funeral service: noon Monday, Feb. 6, at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Cedar Rapids. A visitation will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home. Burial: Oak Hill Cemetery.
Gurtrude was born June 3, 1922, to Ether and Mattie (Clark) Hunt in McLemoresville, Tenn. She married Cleopher Luter on Sept. 16, 1939, in McLemoresville and later they moved to Cedar Rapids. Gurtrude was employed as a professional nanny for Dr. Percy Harris for many years before working at Quaker Oats. She retired in 1987 after 13 years of service.
Gurtrude was a member of New Reedy Creek Baptist Church before her faithful membership at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Cedar Rapids for 57 years. There she served on the Sr. Usher Board, Hattie Green Missionary Club, Woman's Quartet Group and Kitchen Committee. Gurtrude also was a member of the Webb Alumni Association and NAACP of Cedar Rapids.
Her hobbies consisted of cooking, gardening and traveling. Her specialty was making homemade ice cream and cha cha pickle. She especially loved spending time with her family on a regular basis. Gurtrude had a special love for everyone who knew her.
Survivors include her son, Cleo (Shirley) Luter; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; a special nephew, Marvin Hillsman; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and siblings, Grover Hunt Sr., S.T. Hunt and Jessie M. Hillsman.
