Gull, Larry Lew Dettmer

Larry Lew Dettmer Gull died peacefully from complications following a stroke at the Guttenberg Care Center on Christmas morning 2013.

Larry was born July 17, 1933, on a farm near Garnavillo, the son of Harry E. Gull and Evelyn (Dettmer) Gull. Larry was an adventurous young boy, taking flying lessons at age 9. Larry trusted Jesus Christ as his Savior on Dec. 6, 1942. This was the most important event in his life and directed his focus to the end.

Larry graduated from Garnavillo in 1949 at age 15. Being the most experienced driver, he drove his senior class to Chicago. Larry was part of Draft Order No. 44, December 1953, serving in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during the Korean War.

On Jan. 27, 1956, Larry married Nancy Belle Taylor in East Hartford, Conn. Larry actively farmed into November of 2013, planting and spraying all the crops and starting the combining. He raised Landrace, Large White, and Duroc breeding stock for many years. He received a Century Farm award at the Iowa State Fair in 2013. He truly loved farming, both as a business and as his only hobby.

Larry is survived by his wife, Nancy, of nearly 58 years; two sons, Kevin (Jackie) Gull of Guttenberg and Timothy (Tina) Gull of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren, Audra (Steven) Janes of Garnavillo, Rachel Gull of Cedar Rapids, Jenn Seitz of Chicago, Spencer Gull of Guttenberg, Lydia (Josh) Sax of Coralville and Jule Staton of Cedar Rapids; two great-grandchildren, Aiyana and Rowan Janes of Garnavillo; and two sisters, Fannie Trayer of Garnavillo and Dixie (David) Estrem of Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Arrangements are being handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 001 S. Industrial Park Rd., Garnavillo, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, at the Gospel Hall in Garnavillo. Interment will be at the Garnavillo Community Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to 27918 Hwy 52, Guttenberg IA, 52052, where donations will be made to local charities and organizations.
