GUILLERMO "BILL" LOPEZ JR.
Iowa City
Guillermo "Bill" Lopez Jr., 57, of Iowa City, passed away Monday, Oct. 9, 2017, at Mercy Iowa City surrounded by his family's love. A gathering for family and friends to celebrate Bill's life will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, at Gay & Ciha Funeral Service, Iowa City, with a time of sharing beginning at 7:30 p.m. Online condolences may be shared with his family at www.gayandciha.com.
Bill was born June 23, 1960, in San Antonio, Texas, the son of Guillermo Lopez Sr. and Sylvia (Valdez) Lopez. On April 17, 1981, Bill married Debra Martin in Las Vegas, Nev., where they would begin their family and live until coming to Iowa City in 1993. A few years later, in 1997, Bill began his career with Toyota Financial in Cedar Rapids, working almost 20 years as a claims specialist in the insurance division and more recently taking the position of administrative specialist with the credit dispute team.
Bill was a hardworking family man who wasn't shy with his thoughts. He devoted his life to his family, hosting barbecues, fires or anything else simply to get everyone together on the weekends. He was a proud grandpa, always attending their dance and sporting events. When not out with family, he could be found making furniture or thinking up another project to construct.
Survivors include his wife and soulmate of 36 years, Debra; children, Guillermo "Billy" Lopez III (Ashley) of North Liberty and Kathalyn "Lyn" McAfee (Shawn) of Tiffin; grandchildren, Devin, Brayden and Karalyn McAfee and Kailyn and Guillermo "Trey" Lopez IV; sisters, Sally Perea (Lewis), Yvonne Damas and Doreen Lopez, all of Nevada; Debra's parents, Thomas and Kathy Martin of Florida, and her siblings, Michelle Gallegos, Greg Martin and Theresa Martin; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Ethan Michael McAfee.
