Gruver, Melanie S.
Melanie S. Gruver, 55, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Clinton and Des Moines, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011, at the Donna and Dennis Oldorf Hospice House at Mercy in Hiawatha, after a short battle with cancer. Following her wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A gathering of family and friends will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, at the Pape Funeral Home, Clinton, with a memorial service to begin at 2 p.m.
Melanie was born in Cedar Rapids, on August 7, 1955, the daughter of Marvin and Evelyn Evans Fortune Sr. While living in Clinton, Melanie had worked at Sticky's Two-by-Four and the Parkside. She was a clerk with the Quik Trip Corp. in both Cedar Rapids and Des Moines, where she was loved by all her co-workers and customers.
Melanie was a loving mother and grandmother. One of her favorite pastimes was shopping at Goodwill.
Melanie is survived by two daughters, Holly Scudder of Cedar Rapids, and Samantha Scudder of Des Moines; five grandchildren, Kyleigh, Taylor, Alexis, Tyson and Jena; her mother, Evelyn Morgan of Cedar Rapids; a brother, Marvin (Karen) Fortune Jr. of Spokane, Wash.; and two sisters, Shelia Arenas of Cedar Rapids, and Kathy (Clarence) Walz of Eighty Four, Pa.
She was preceded in death by her father and a brother, Timothy Fortune.
