Grover, Guy F.
Guy F. Grover, 85, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Rowley and Independence, died Friday, Nov. 15, 2013, at The MethWick Community in Cedar Rapids.
He was born in Independence on June 26, 1928, the son of John Devere and Martha Elizabeth (Basquin) Grover. He attended high school in Rowley and then joined the U.S. Army. On Aug. 13, 1949, he and the former Shirley Ann Kuhn were married at St. John's Chapel in Independence. They farmed in the Rowley area and Mr. Grover also was a real estate developer.
He was a member of the Buchanan County Historical Society and Pheasants Forever and served on the Buchanan County Conservation Board.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing and playing the slot machines at casinos.
Mr. Grover was an environmentalist and involved in preserving the natural habitat. He and his wife donated the Guy Grover Timber area to Buchanan County. He and his brother, Max, planted thousands of trees in the area.
Mr. Grover is survived by his wife of 64 years, Shirley; two sons, Michael (Vicky) Grover of Cedar Rapids and Mark (Jason) Grover of Iowa City; two daughters, Patricia Grover of Mountain View, Calif., and Beth (Danny) Hinde of Cedar Rapids; and two grandchildren, Travis Grover and Joshua Hinde. He is also survived by two brothers, James (Colleen) Grover and Max (Charlotte) Grover, both of Rowley; and three sisters, Gladys Corkery of Independence and Ruby Marks and Ruth Hanson, both of Rowley.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, William Grover and Leland Grover, in infancy.
Funeral Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, at White Funeral Home in Independence, with Pastor Sheri Andersen officiating. Burial will be in Rowley Cemetery. Friends may call for visitation from 2 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, at White Funeral Home in Independence, where a military service begins at 7:30 p.m.
