Gritton, Dean 'Red' Charles
Dean “Red” Charles Gritton was born April 8, 1930, to the parents of Charles and Anna Houser Gritton, on the family farm in Buchanan County. He graduated with the Winthrop High School Class of 1947. Entering the Army in 1951, he served his country for two years during the Korean conflict.
On March 22, 1953, Dean married Barbara Cusick at the Methodist Church in Winthrop, Iowa. They had four children: Michael, Kathryn, Don, and Duane. Over the years, he farmed, worked at Great Plains Supply, drove a propane gas bulk truck, and most recently, rode his bicycle.
Baseball was a family affair and for many years, he loved pitching to his brother, Buster, who was the Winthrop Town Team's catcher. A Baseball memorial at the Dyersville Ball Park contains his name as well as his teammates to honor their play. He will be remembered for his many bike trips around town and being a friendly and helpful neighbor. He had a special love with “his” squirrels, which benefited from his dedicated feeding.
On Aug. 8, 2012, Dean “Red” Gritton entered into his eternal rest at his Winthrop home, peacefully in his sleep. He was 82 years of age.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Barbara; and his three brothers, Glen, Dale, and LaVerne (Buster).
Survivors include his children, Michael (Rhonda) of Decorah, Kathryn of Cedar Rapids, Don (Dawn) of Independence and Duane (Kim) of Winthrop; his three grandchildren, Steven, Diana and Taylor; and his great-grandson, Andrew.
As per Dean's wishes, there will be no visitation or memorial service. A private inurnment will be held at Fremont Cemetery, north of Winthrop.
