Sister Anita Rose Grimes (Sister Mary Anita Rose), 94, died Thursday evening, Aug. 20, 2009, at Genesis East Medical Center, Davenport. A Visitation at the Humility of Mary Center, Magnificat Chapel, 820 W. Central Park Ave. in Davenport will be Tuesday, Aug. 25, from 4 to 7 p.m., with a rosary at 4 p.m. and vigil service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Humility of Mary Center. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home in Davenport is assisting with arrangements.
Catherine Anne Grimes was born June 7, 1915, in Parnell, Iowa, a daughter of James Grimes and Margaret (Daley) Grimes. She entered the Congregation of the Humility of Mary on June 27, 1932, and professed vows on Aug. 1, 1935. She attended Ottumwa Heights College in Ottumwa, where she received an A.A. degree in elementary education and went on to receive a B.A. degree in education from St. Ambrose University in Davenport. She pursued further studies in music at Marycrest College, Davenport; De Paul University, Chicago; Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wis., and the University of Iowa, Iowa City.
Sister Anita Rose's teaching career in music spanned a 50-year period from 1935-1985. She taught music in Iowa Catholic elementary schools in Ottumwa, Des Moines, Marshalltown, Neola and Centerville and also in Rock Island, Ill. She taught music in Iowa Catholic high schools in Ottumwa, Marshalltown, Le Mars and Fort Madison. After her teaching career Sister Anita Rose retired in 1985 at the Humility of Mary Center and engaged in volunteer office work at Assumption High School in Davenport for 13 years.
Sister Anita Rose was preceded in death by her parents; and her brothers, James and Ralph.
She is survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews as well as by Humility of Mary sisters and associates.
