Gretchen Snider passed away Wednesday, June 21, 2017, at Oaknoll Retirement Residence in Iowa City at the age of 86.

Gretchen was born Sept. 14, 1930, in Spencer, Iowa, to William and Elizabeth Flindt. The family had a summer home at Lake Okoboji, and Gretchen loved spending her summers at the lake. She participated in competitive sailboat racing and also enjoyed swimming, picnicking and dancing at the Roof Garden in Arnolds Park.

She graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in economics. Gretchen and Frank Snider Jr. were married in 1951 in Spencer, where they made their home and raised three children. She was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker.

Her hobbies included cooking, knitting and volunteer work. Gretchen and Frank enjoyed traveling, visiting Europe, Alaska, several Caribbean islands, Canada and California to visit their children and grandchildren.

Gretchen is survived by her husband, Frank; son, William Snider and his wife, Vel; grandchildren, Douglas Graham, Alison Snider and Benjamin Snider and his wife, Katie.

She was preceded in death by son, James Snider; daughter, Melanie Graham; and granddaughter, Sarah Graham.

Private graveside services will be held at Sharon Hill Cemetery in Kalona.
