Gretchen A. Hurt, 75, of Iowa City, passed away Sunday, Nov. 30, 2014, at Mercy Iowa City's hospice unit. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 5, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Coralville. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, with a rosary service at 7 p.m. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, Iowa City.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to GBS/CIDP Foundation International.
Gretchen was born
Aug. 27, 1939, in Iowa City, the daughter of Paul and Ann (Kelly) Kessler. She was raised near Cosgrove, Iowa, and attended Cosgrove Schools and Iowa State Teachers College, now the University of Northern Iowa.
Gretchen married James Hurt on Aug. 19, 1961, at St. Peters Church in Cosgrove. She taught in Marengo and owned the Cumberland Bookshelf in Bettendorf. Gretchen also managed book stores in Massachusetts and northern Ohio. She was a member of Better Investing (the National Association of Investors Corporation) since 1997.
Gretchen was a chapter director and president of the OKI Tri-State Chapter of Better Investing in Cincinnati. She was a board member of the Heartland Chapter in Iowa and chair of the Better Investing Volunteer advisory board. Gretchen created and taught several classes nationally on investing.
Survivors include her husband, Jim; three children, Michelle (Kurt Andersen) Hurt, Brian Hurt and Paul (Jackie) Hurt; three grand-daughters, Ashley (Sina) Taheri, Katie Thrasher and Sarah Thrasher; and a sister, Paula (Mike) Colvin.
