Greif, Alvina
Alvina Greif, 84, of Monticello, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha.Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Fridayat the Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello, where a parish vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friends may continue to call after 9 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Monticello.A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Monticello. The Rev. Keith Birch will officiate. Burial will be at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Castle Grove.
Alvina was born Nov. 10, 1927, in Cascade, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Amelia (Kelchen) Manternach.
She married Robert J. Greif on June 14, 1950, in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Cascade, Iowa. Together they farmed for 40 years in the Prairieburg, Lamont and Castle Grove area. After retirement they spent time together traveling to several foreign countries. Alvina was an accomplished and prolific quilter whose works are enjoyed by many family members and friends. She was a member of the Merry Makers Club and the Calico Cut Ups Quilt Club.
Alvina is survived by a daughter, Barbara (Keith) Kuhlengel of Palmyra, Pa.; two sons, Donald (Deann) of Chico, Calif., Roger (Beth) of Cedar Rapids;seven grandchildren, Adrienne Kuhlengel of Lancaster, Pa., Trevor Kuhlengel of Palmyra Pa., Ryan (Lisa) Greif of Davis, Calif., Marcus Greif of Reno, Nev., Lainie Greif of Chico, Calif., Jeremiah Burhite of Des Moinesand Joshua Burhite of Ames; one great-grandchild, Alexa Greif of Davis, Calif.; siblings, Veronica Welter, Katie (Harry) Rockzien, Larry (Lois) Manternach, Joseph (Joanne) Manternach, Ralph (Rita) Manternach, Loras (Donna) Manternach, Joan (Thomas) Hoffman, Ronald (Bridget) Manternach, Muriel (Duane) Schlemme, Lois (Alan) Gravel and Lester (Mary Ellen) Manternach; a brother-in-law, Clarence Quint; plus many brothers-and-sisters-in-law; as well as nieces and nephews.
Alvina was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert earlier this year; her son, David in 2009; and four sisters, Florence Schockemoehl, Eleanor Quint, Eva Mae Klocke and Sr. Irmina (Leona) Manternach.
Memorials are preferred to the Monticello Ambulance Service.
