Gregory H. Peery, 67, was born on
May 14, 1955, in Roanoke, Va. He passed away on Thursday, May 19, 2022, at his
home in Salem, Va.
Gregory graduated from Andrew
Lewis High School in 1974. He was a lifelong member of Bethel AME Church Cave Spring. He served in the choir playing bass, guitar and drums. As a talented musician, Gregory also played in several bands, most notably Flip Side (bass guitar) in Cedars Rapids, Iowa, where he lived for many years before moving to Des Moines, Iowa. His friends in Iowa nicknamed him “Grandpa." The band Flip Side traveled to numerous states and was recognized in the Iowa Music Hall of Fame. He moved back to Virginia in 2015. Gregory had a loving spirit and a sharp sense of humor. He loved people, and he had a heart of gold. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed by his children, brothers, sisters and extended family.
Gregory was preceded in death by his father, Reynold D. Peery; his mother, Laurie Beane Peery; and his sister, Wanda Elaine Peery Alston.
He is survived by his daughters, Nikisha Renee Peery (MN), Cheyanne (IA) and sons, Colton and Isaiah (IA); granddaughter, Nalah (MN); grandsons, Jayden and Austin (MN); sisters, Bernice (Steve) Peery Cass (of the UK) and Eulah (Lamont) Coward (VA); brothers, Andre’ (Sandra) Peery (VA), Jeronne (Matti) Peery (TX), Cornelius (Mary Ann) Peery (KY), and Cedric (Carrie) Peery (NV); two aunts, Blonnie Tipton (NC) and Bernice Peery (VA); three uncles, Donald Peery (VA), James Peery (VA), and Rev. Archie (Barbara) Richmond (VA); and a host of other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 23, at the American Legion Post 3, 710 Apperson Drive, Salem, Va. The celebration will be a "New Orleans Style" memorial service.
