Greenwood, Virgil 'Virg'
Virgil “Virg” Greenwood, 89, died Monday, Dec. 23, 2013, at the Vinton Lutheran Home following an extended illness. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 27, at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. Sixth St., Vinton, with Roger Uthoff officiating. Friends may register from 10 a.m. until service time. Private committal services will be held at Maplewood Cemetery in Vinton.
Virgil Dean Greenwood was born Aug. 16, 1924, at Vinton, to George E. and Maude E. (Hopper) Greenwood and graduated from Lincoln High School in Vinton. During World War II, he served his nation in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post #57 of Vinton and the 40 & 8.
On Feb. 20, 1943, he was united in marriage to Inez Donegan at Cedar Rapids. She preceded him in death on April 13, 2012.
Virg loved fishing, golfing and mushroom hunting
He is survived by his daughter, Sue (Randy) Eckhoff of Dike; his son, Gordon Greenwood of Vinton; his grandchildren, Molly (Jason) Dabroski of Marion and Justin Eckhoff of Dike; his great-grandchildren, Addison and Emerson Dabroski; and his sister-in-law, Evelyn Greenwood of Vinton.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Ray Greenwood.
