Greene, Vera V.
Vera V. Greene died Saturday, July 20, 2013, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City at the age of 90 years. A Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 23, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English. Father Joseph Roost will preside. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Sigourney. Visitation will be Monday, July 22, from 4 to 7 p.m., with a rosary at 7 p.m. and a time of sharing following at Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English.
A general memorial fund has been established.

Vera Virginia Greene was born March 16, 1923, near Harper, Iowa, the daughter of John and Agnes (Hammes) Bombei. She attended St. Peter and Paul Catholic School at Clear Creek. Vera was united in married to John M. Greene on May 14, 1946, at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Together the couple farmed north of Keswick. They moved to Valley View Assisted Living in North English in the spring of 2011.
She loved being in the kitchen cooking for her family and friends. She was known for her cinnamon rolls. Vera was a wonderful seamstress for her six daughters.
She was extremely proud of and enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In recent years she enjoyed watching the many birds out of her window. Vera was a former parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Keswick and a current parishioner of St. Joseph Church in North English.
Vera is survived by eight children, Carol (Dennis) Wolff of Oelwein, John R. Greene of Webster, Gerald (Holly) Greene of Deep River, Joan Braymen of Shawnee, Kan., Mary (Dale) Smith of Decorah, Denise (John) Conrad of Rose Hill, Roberta (Dave) Stakland of Washington and Judy Greene of Bettendorf; 22 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John in August 2011; sisters, Mildred Striegel, Alma Striegel and Dorothy Conrad; and brothers, Irvin and Leonard Bombei.
