Greene, John M.
John M. Greene died Monday, Aug. 15, 2011, at Mercy Iowa City at the age of 92 years. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English. Father Joseph Roost will preside. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Sigourney, with military rites. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English, where there will be a KC rosary at 7 p.m.
John was born March 7, 1919, near Keswick, Iowa, the son of James J. and Bertha A. (Nilles) Greene. He graduated from Gibson High School. He served his country in the U.S. Army as a medic from 1942 to 1945. John was united in married to Vera V. Bombei on May 14, 1946, at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church near Harper. Together the couple farmed north of Keswick. They moved to Valley View Assisted Living in North English in the spring of this year.
John enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, playing cards and Dominos, doing crosswords, and telling stories of the war and his childhood days. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and the American Legion in Keswick.
John is survived by his wife of 65 years, Vera of North English; eight children, Carol (Dennis) Wolff of Oelwein, John R. Greene of Keswick, Gerald (Holly) Greene of Deep River, Joan Braymen of Shawnee, Kan., Mary (Dale) Smith of Decorah, Denise (John) Conrad of Rose Hill, Roberta (Dave) Stakland of Fairfield and Judy Greene of Bettendorf; 19 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Greene and Kathleen Strohman, both of West Des Moines; a brother, Richard (Carol) Greene of Williamsport, Pa.; and two sisters-in-laws, Theresa Green of Keswick and Marilyn Greene of St. Petersburg, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Anna (Carl) Stites, Jesse (Carroll) McCurdy, Ellen (Howard) Selk and an infant, Bertha Greene; and his brothers, James, Frank, Roy and an infant, Vincent Greene.
