A lifelong Cubs fan, ardent Irishmen and longtime Omaha resident, John died, surrounded by his wife of 60 years and his eight children.
Formerly of Parnell, Cedar Rapids and Fontanelle, Iowa, John served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and worked for the Rock Island Railroad for more than 30 years. He delivered pharmaceuticals for Kohll's Pharmacy and owned and operated the Hitching Post in Fontanelle.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Rita (Gaffey) Grady; brother, Francis Jr. Grady; and grandson, Jesse France.
Survivors include his wife, Irene “Pat” (Rothmeyer) Grady; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandy and Robert McPeak, Kristin and Gary Gilger, Pam and Ron Slavik, Becky and Leroy Ortega, Stacy and Dan Loukota and Patty and Randy Nelson; son and daughter-in-law, Creighton and Chris Grady; and son, Kevin Grady; 18 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the West Center Chapel, with vigil service at 4 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial: 10 a.m. Monday, St. Gerald Catholic Church, 96th and Q Streets, Omaha. Interment: Hillcrest Memorial Park, Omaha, with military rites by Benson VFW Post 2503.
