Gordon Main
GORDON L. MAIN
Independence
Gordon L. Main, 64, of Independence, died Tuesday evening, Sept. 12, 2017, in his home in Independence.
Gordon was born April 22, 1953, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Harold and Anna Mae (Weaver) Main. He graduated from Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids and received an associate's degree from Kirkwood Community College. He spent many years working road construction and in a landfill operation. He enjoyed those years until he lost a leg due to cancer… or as he told his grandchildren "to the Wapsigator."
He had a great sense of humor and a wonderful outlook on life. He taught all his children and grandchildren many things, from making sure you work hard and don't let things bother you to "there's never too many fishing poles."
He was married twice, first to Phyllis Selck, then to Kathy Hilmer, and was presently with his girlfriend of 17 years, Kathy Phelps, who ended up being the only one who could handle him.
Gordon is survived by his girlfriend, Kathy Phelps, Independence; five children: Jennifer (Wyatt) Meyer, Strawberry Point; Chris (Tracy) Main, Mercer, Mo.; and Rick Main, Stacy Main and Sara Main of Independence; Kathy's daughter; Christina Leach, Cedar Rapids; 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Laurie Whightsil, Cedar Rapids; a brother, Tom Main, Lansing, Mich.; and his best friend, Dave Fisher of New Mexico.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, at his home in Independence.
