Goldie A. Wright Shaffer, 93, passed from this earth into the loving arms of her Savior on July 21, 2022.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 25, 2022, at Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton, with the Rev. David Lingard officiating. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
Goldie was born July 30, 1928, in Vinton, to Herman and Adelia [Schminke] Alpers. On Aug. 4, 1946, she married the love of her life, Robert V. Wright. During the 10 years following their union, they added three children to round out their family. Bob and Goldie resided in rural Van Horne, Iowa, most of their married life. Goldie was active in her church and children’s activities. Her primary focus was always supporting Bob in his occupational ventures; whether it be farming, real estate or auctioneering, Goldie was always at his side. In 1974, they moved to Vinton, Iowa, where they began their last venture together in owning and operating the Modern Motel. Following Bob’s death, Goldie was married to Don Shaffer from Sept. 2, 1979, until his death, Jan. 28, 2015. Don and Goldie successfully operated the motel until their retirement in 1997.
In addition to her parents and husbands, Goldie was preceded in death by her sisters, Hazel Alpers, Ruby (Robert) Huppert, Bernita (Harold) Flickinger and Rachel (Don) Butts; and son-in-law Dwayne Burkey.
Survivors include her three children and their families, Steve [Joyce] Wright of Cambridge, Iowa, Judy Burkey of Vinton and Kathy [Rod] Potter of Ankeny, Iowa; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
