Gohres, Sister Helen (Mary Celeste)
CEDAR RAPIDS - Sister Helen (Mary Celeste) Gohres, Franciscan Sister of Perpetual Adoration, 92, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 2010, at Villa St. Joseph, La Crosse, Wis. Funeral and burial were Sept. 28 at Villa St. Joseph.
Sister Helen was born to Joseph and Lilah (Anderson) Gohres on June 16, 1918, in La Crosse. She entered St. Rose Convent in 1937. After earning a degree in music education, Sister Helen taught in elementary schools in Iowa, Utah and Wisconsin for 27 years. She then earned a degree in religious education and ministered in that capacity in Commerce City and Denver, Colo., and Lansing, Iowa, for a total of nine years. Another ministry change led her to become involved in Pastoral Care in Kansas City and Cedar Rapids, Iowa from 1979-1987. Moving back to La Crosse, Sister Helen served in pastoral care and liturgy at Villa St. Joseph for 12 years before her retirement in 1999.
Sister Helen is survived by her Franciscan community; her sister, Lilah Lind, Minneapolis; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Joseph.
