Goering, Opal I.
Opal I. Goering, 89, of Saddlebrook Estates in Iowa City, died unexpectedly Monday, Oct. 4, 2010, at Mercy Iowa City. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Patricks Catholic Church with The Very Rev. Rudolph Juarez officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City, where a rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City.
Memorials may be directed to The Opal Goering Memorial Fund.
Opal was born Feb. 3, 1921, in Correctionville, Iowa, the daughter of August and Clara (Keller) Kabisch. She was raised in Correctionville and moved to the Iowa City area in 1939. She was united in marriage to Harold Goering on Dec. 27, 1945, at St. Patricks in Iowa City.
Opal worked for ACT in Iowa City, retiring from full-time status in 1977. She continued to work part-time at ACT until 2007. She was a longtime member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and a former member of St. Patricks Altar & Rosary and the VFW Auxillary.
Opal is survived by her children, Richard Goering (Margaret) of Iowa City, Karen Bixby of Iowa City, and Shirley Lyle of Greenville, S.C.; grandchildren, Brian, Bradley (Karen) and Jennifer; great-grandchildren, Grahm and Mason; sisters, Kathryn Miller of Coralville, and Virginia Malcolm (Alfred) of Kingsley, Iowa; brother, Walter Kabisch (Virginia) of Moville, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Ruby Kabisch of Kingsley.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2003; a brother, Robert; and a son-in-law, Virgil Bixby.
