Gloria Ann Bontrager, 63, died Sunday morning, Dec. 6, 2015, after a year-and-a-half long battle with breast cancer.
She was born Sept. 22, 1952, in Canton, Ohio, the daughter of Jonas J. and Donella Mae (Zook) Coblentz. She graduated from Marlington High School in 1970 and from Hesston College in 1972. On Jan. 26, 1974, Gloria was united in marriage to Dan Bontrager in Lewisville, Ohio. Together they made their home in the Iowa City community where Gloria was a wife and mother to her family. She was a member of First Mennonite Church in Iowa City. She also was known for the strawberry pies she brought to the MCC sale and the football concession stand, which she started at church. Gloria enjoyed gardening, working outside, volunteering her time at many church functions, but most of all, she loved her family and spending time with them.
Gloria is survived by her husband, Dan of Iowa City; her son, Aaron Bontrager of Iowa City; her daughter, Johanna (Brad) Bishop of Fort Collins, Colo.; two grandchildren, Hayden and Emma; her parents, Jonas and Donella Coblentz of North Canton, Ohio; two sisters, Rosella (Dan) Hernley of Sarasota, Fla., and Judy (Howard) Vadasz of Hartville, Ohio; a brother, Randy (Ruth) Coblentz of Sarasota, Fla.; six nieces and nephews; and four great-nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 11, at the First Mennonite Church in Iowa City. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, at the church.
A memorial fund has been established for First Mennonite Church kitchen and Iowa City Hospice.
The Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona is in charge of the arrangements.
