Glenn was born March 14, 1942, in Eden Township, the son of Lloyd and Viola (Knuth) Werning. He lived his entire life on his family's century farm.
He graduated from Newhall High School with the Class of 1959. On Sept. 5, 1964, he was united in marriage to Marjorie Gahring at St. John Lutheran Church in Keystone. Together they raised three sons, Greg, Gene and Barry. Early on, Glenn enjoyed watching his sons show cattle throughout the Midwest. This was their family activity for many years.
Glenn loved farming, driving a school bus and being involved in the Benton County Fair. He always enjoyed getting to know the younger generation from talking to them while he drove the Benton Community school bus to chatting on the microphone as he called the Barnyard Babies and Kiddie Capers at the Benton County Fair for over 30 years. He also enjoyed getting acquainted with the county fair queen candidates. He enjoyed going on numerous tractor rides around the state of Iowa on his J.D. 4020.
Glenn was a longtime member of the Benton County Fair board, served as a Newhall Fire District trustee and was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall. In 2010, he was honored as an Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame inductee.
Glenn was an avid Hawkeye fan and loved attending many basketball games through the years. He and Marge enjoyed camping and going on many road trips. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his grandkids.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Werning of Newhall; three sons, Greg (Tami) Werning of Tiffin, Gene (Andrea) Werning of Conroe, Texas, and Barry (Brenda) Werning of Blairstown; his grandchildren, Samantha, Madison, Nathan and Danielle; his mother-in-law, Alice Gahring of Shellsburg; and his brother, Russell Werning of Newhall.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law, Merlyn Gahring.
He was a proud and caring husband, dad and grandpa.
