Glenn H. Havel, 73, of Iowa City, passed away Monday, Aug. 3, 2015, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics from complications of a hemorrhagic stroke. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, with a vigil service at 6:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Glenn Havel Memorial Fund.
Glenn was born on Oct. 7, 1941, in West Branch, the son of Hugo and Marie (Hora) Havel. He was united in marriage to Doris Elaine Stika on May 6, 1967, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. After 20 years of marriage, they had a beautiful daughter, Darcy, the real joy of their lives. Glenn was a parking attendant for the University of Iowa dental parking lot for 20 years, retiring in 1987. He was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and Hemophilia of Iowa. Glenn loved classic cars. Glenn and Doris were founding members of the Cruiseamatics car club and the Classy Chassy Cruisers car club. He also loved animals, especially his cats. They held a special place in his heart. He would stop on the side of the road to remove dead animals so no one would run over them, even though he was physically impaired and on crutches.
Glenn is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Doris; his daughter, Darcy (Gabe) Havel-Sturdevant of Iowa City; two sisters, Carol Vance of Iowa City and Diane (Tim) Havel-Bradley of Tiffin; two stepsisters, Coramarie Rathmel of Knoxville and Dianna Rath of North Liberty; brother-in-law, Bob (Edyie) Stika of Iowa City; a special godchild, Stacey Bradley of Tiffin; several nieces and nephews; and his cats and grandpoodles, Logan Andrew and Markus Adrian.
Glenn was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Donald Lee Havel; stepmother, Marilyn Havel; and stepbrother, Virgil Parker.
