GLENN "TATER" CUMBERLAND

Glenn "Tater" Cumberland, 94, died Friday, April 24, 2015, at the Vinton Lutheran Home following an extended illness. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 28, at Urbana Christian Church, with the
Rev. Melanie Van Weelden officiating. Interment will be at Urbana Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Vinton.
A memorial fund has been established.
Glenn Rush Cumberland, known to family and friends as "Tater," was born Oct. 6, 1920, near Urbana to Rush and Gracia (Curless) Cumberland. In 1938, he graduated from Urbana High School, as did many of his relatives.
He was a member of the Urbana School Alumni Association and proudly served on the Urbana school board. He was a member of the Christian Church, where he served as an elder, and was a charter member of the Urbana Lions Club.
"Tater" farmed and operated a trucking business before his retirement.
On Oct. 27, 1945, he was united in marriage to Georgia McLaughlin in Cedar Rapids. She preceded him in death on Dec. 29, 2001.
He is survived by his daughters, Diana (Marion) Lamphier of Urbana, Gwendolyn (Bryan) Schaeffer of Wapello and Halane (Phillip) Cummings of Center Point; six grandchildren, Carrie (Steve) Petersen, James (Chandra) Lamphier, USMC Corporal Grant Schaeffer, Ryan Schaeffer, Molly Cummings and Emily Cummings; two great-grandchildren, Logan Petersen and Lucas Petersen; his sisters-in-law, Mary McLaughlin, Sharon McLaughlin and Sharon Lindroth; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Georgia Lamphier; his sisters, Betty Marshall and Naomi McCormick; and his brother, Philip Cumberland.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the Vinton Lutheran Home and Hospice Compassus for the comfort and care they provided for Glenn and his family.
