Glen Rickels, 79, died Monday, Feb. 22, 2016, at his home following a brief illness. Private funeral services will be held at the Wayne Zion Lutheran Church, rural Monticello, with interment in the Wayne Zion Cemetery. The Rev. Wade Reddy will officiate at the services. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello.

Surviving is his wife of 60 years, Janice; four sons, Calvin (Megan) Rickels, Vinton, Scott (Ranae) Rickels, Morrison, Ill., Todd (Lisa) Rickels, Monticello, and Tom (Lisa) Rickels, Fenton, Ill.; 11 grandchildren, Austin, Dylan (Amber), Kelsey (Justin), Addy (Tyler), Kelyn, Brody, Brenna, Caleb, Kacie, Benett and Paige; one great-granddaughter, Emma; and his brother, Rex (Nancy) Rickels, Monticello.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Louis and LaVerne; and a sister, Evalena Jeffrey.
Glen Gerhard Rickels was born July 4, 1936, in Wayne Township, Jones County, Iowa. He was the son of George E. and Meta Poppe Rickels. Glen attended Wayne Center Schools. He graduated from Monticello Community Schools with the class of 1954. He continued his education at the University of Iowa for a year.
Glen married Janice Rink on Aug. 14, 1955, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Monticello. Glen farmed his entire working career in Wayne Township. He was a lifelong member of the Wayne Zion Lutheran Church. While in high school, Glen participated in basketball as well as football, where he was selected as the captain and achieved all-state honors. Glen was a member of the inaugural class of the Monticello High School Hall of Fame in 1992. Glen's hobbies included bowling, fishing, playing golf and cards. Most of all, he cherished spending time with his family and friends.
The family would like to thank Dr. Weston and his staff, Jones Regional Medical Center and Above and Beyond Hospice for all the care and compassion shown to Glen and his family.
