Glen D. Jones, born June 11, 1936, in Winterset, Iowa, passed away peacefully Sept. 17, 2021, in Sarasota, Fla., to be with the Lord. Glen fought a courageous battle with lung cancer and died with family at his side.
Glen was raised on a farm in St. Charles, Iowa. He graduated from St. Charles High School in 1954. A talented baseball player, Glen considered a scholarship offer from Drake University. In the end, he chose to get married and start a family with Donna Marie Hand, whom he'd met while living in Collins, Iowa. They were married on Feb. 5, 1955, at Methodist Church, Maxwell, Iowa.
Glen worked for Sutherland Lumber Co., then Ilten Lumber Co, then managed Des Moines Cashway, all in Des Moines. Glen and Donna moved the family to Cedar Rapids when Glen was hired by National Gypsum Co., where he worked from 1966 until 2000, retiring at the age of 64. While working for National Gypsum, Glen was often named Salesman of the Year.
Glen and Donna retired permanently to Sarasota, Fla., in 2010. Glen enjoyed retirement and was a member of many civic organizations including being a Master Mason of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, SAHIB Shrine of Sarasota, Fla., lifetime member of Elks Club and Fraternal Order of Eagles and Sons of the American Legion. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 10141 of Bradenton, Fla.
Glen was passionate about his Iowa Hawkeyes and watched their football games with much joy. His favorite movies were westerns, and he especially loved those that featured John Wayne.
Glen was predeceased by his son, Kirk Jones; his parents, Glen H. Jones and Leona Mae Comp Jones; and his sister, Dess Lee Talimonchuk.
Glen is survived by his beloved wife, Donna, who he was devoted to for 66 years. He is also survived by his children, Joel Jones, Dianne McGrath (Kevin), Brian Jones (Victoria) and Michael Jones (Hollis); his seven grandchildren, Jamie Bryant (Jason), Joseph Jones, Adam Vincent (Amy), Adrianne Jones (Matt), Nicholas Jones, Abagale Richardson (Brandon) and Spencer Jones; and his six great-grandchildren, Jonas, Jameson, Aydan, Jiovani, Aurora and Trenton. He is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews.
