Glass, Robert 'Bob' Dean
Robert “Bob” Dean Glass, 85, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, at his residence following an extended illness. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Vinton with Father David Ambrosy as celebrant. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton, with graveside military rites conducted by Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post 57 of Vinton. Friends may call at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. Sixth St. in Vinton on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m., when a Scripture service led by Sister Mary Hargrafen will begin.
A memorial fund has been established.
Bob was born May 3, 1924, near Vinton, to Homer D. and Eliza (Hurst) Glass, and graduated from the high school in Urbana in 1942. On Oct. 1, 1943, he was united in marriage to Delores Kramer at the Catholic Church in Oxford Junction. From 1943 to 1945, he served his nation in the U.S. Navy. He had been employed by the former Winsor Oil Co. and Hawkbilt in Vinton. For 10 years he served as the Veteran Affairs commissioner for Benton County. Bob was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Vinton. He was a past commander of the VFW, and a 50-year member of Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post 57 of Vinton. Playing cards, watching the Cubs and the Hawkeye games gave him pleasure, but his greatest joy came from spending time with family and friends.
Bob is survived by his wife of 66 years, Delores Glass of Vinton; his daughter, Barbara Evans of Madison, Wis.; his sons, Ronald Glass of San Francisco and Richard (Carol) Glass of Cedar Rapids; his grandchildren, Michael Evans, Matthew Glass and Megan (Scott) Bogard; his stepgrandson, Brian Glass; and his great-granddaughter, Maddyson Bogard.
His parents, and two sisters, Ruth Shackleford and Patricia Witt, preceded him in death.
