Gladys Valencic, 90, of Marion, Iowa, and formerly of Escanaba, Mich., passed away peacefully Saturday, May 28, 2022, at Keystone Cedars Assisted Living in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Gladys was born Oct. 13, 1931, in Escanaba, Mich., the daughter of Iver and Marcella (Moreau) Nelson. She was raised in Escanaba, Mich., and was a 1949 graduate of Escanaba High School.
On Oct. 6, 1951, Gladys was united in marriage to Lawrence Valencic and together the couple made their home, raised their family and spent many wonderful years together in Marion, Iowa. Gladys enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Originating from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Gladys and Larry loved to take family vacations to their home in Kipling, Mich., as often as they could.
Gladys is survived by son, Paul (Corrie) Valencic; daughters, Cathy (Bill) Frajman, Carol (Mark Schmitke) Valencic and Karen (Kevin) Gamble; brother, Gerald (Sonia) Nelson; and grandchildren, Hannah, Emily, Gavin, Ava, Severin and John. Gladys is further survived by several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Larry; Gladys was preceded in death by brother, Hugh Nelson; sister, Margaret Martinson; sister-in-law, Dorothy Nelson; and brother-in-law, Elmer Martinson.
Family will receive friends on Thursday, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone, Mich. Mass of Christian Burial will follow visiting hours, at 2 p.m. at All Saints Church in Gladstone, with the Rev. Fr. Jamie Ziminski officiating. Gladys will be laid to rest in the Fernwood Cemetery. The Skradski Family Funeral Homes of Delta County are assisting with arrangements. Messages of condolence may be offered at www.skradskifuneralhomes.com.
Gladys' family would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to the staff at Keystone Cedars Assisted Living for their exceptional care for Gladys. Additionally, Gladys' family would like to thank Care Initiatives Hospice of Cedar Rapids, Iowa for their loving care throughout the last several months.
