Gladys Stover, 95, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2015, at St. Luke's UnityPoint Hospital Ed and Joan Hempill Hospice, Cedar Rapids, following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at Martelle United Methodist Church where friends may call after 9 a.m. The Rev. Judson Stover and the Rev. John Kaiser will officiate at the services. Interment will be in Norwich Cemetery, Martelle.

Surviving are four children, Marsha Fairbanks and Jayson Stover, both of Martelle, Mark Stover of Ava, Mo., and Judson (Helen) Stover of Winterset; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Verne in 1990, two brothers and two sisters.
Gladys Mae Ewing was born May 4, 1920, at Devil's Elbow, Allamakee County, Iowa. She was the daughter of William and Hannah Willis Ewing. Gladys graduated from Postville High School in 1938. She continued her education at a business school in Davenport. Gladys worked as a commercial artist in Waterloo.
Gladys married Verne H. Stover on Oct. 4, 1944, at Caledonia, Minn. She worked as a telephone operator in Postville. The couple moved to Martelle in 1956. Gladys worked in the hot lunch program at the Martelle Schools. She later worked at the candy counter at Kresge's Department Store in Cedar Rapids. Gladys was an active member of Martelle United Methodist Church.
Gladys was very creative. She was a great cook and baker. She painted porcelain dolls and made ceramics. She could sew anything without a pattern and knitted. She also raised canaries for several years.
