Gladys I. Moore died peacefully in her sleep on Friday, Jan. 2, 2015.

Gladys I. Moore was born Sept. 5, 1914, in Audubon, Iowa. Her parents were Ralph C. Lacy and Katherine Petersen. They were farmers. Gladys graduated from Audubon High School in 1933 and completed training for a teacher's certificate. As a young woman, she cared for her grandparents' Lacy. When married she cared for her uncle, Dave Abrams and father-in-law, Nate S. Moore, both of Iowa City. Also in Iowa City, she worked part-time at various restaurants. The rest of her adult life she cared for her family. She was a great hostess to slumber parties at the Rochester Avenue home. She was a Girl Scout leader and accompanied her husband on Boy Scout events such as jamborees and a council trip to Hawaii. She also helped him with Lions Club events (even the concession stand at the Hawkeye football games). Gladys was a member of the East Lucas Women's Club (now inactive) and Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.

Gladys married Frederick W. Moore on Aug. 20, 1937, in Audubon. They resided their entire married life in Iowa City, first in an apartment with uncle Dave on Jefferson Street then the Moore homestead on Rochester Avenue and later at 1106 E. Fairchild St.

Fred died in August 2001. For a short while Gladys lived at Silvercrest Assisted Living. In 2004, she moved with her daughter, Florence, and son-in-law, John Stockman, to the Stone Bridge development in east Iowa City. She enjoyed the neighborhood children and the view of the countryside. In October 2014, declining health took her to Crestview Nursing and Rehab Center in West Brach.

Gladys was preceded in death by Frederick, her husband of 64 years; her parents; and her brother, Glenn (Bud) Lacy.

She is survived by her four children, Janet Organ of San Antonio, Florence (John) Stockman of Iowa City, Fred G. Moore (Nancy) of Plymouth, Minn., and Mary (Tom) Werch of Dallas Center. Also 12 grandchildren, Jennifer, Becky, Cathy, Brian, Matthew, Danny, Jerry, Bob, David, Tracy, Joanna and Sharon; 22 great-grandchildren; and nephews, George Kondora of North Liberty and Paul Moore of Solon.

The family (nearly 60 strong from all over the U.S.) attended her 100th birthday celebration in July 2014. She received over 200 birthday greetings and enjoyed a weekend of visiting, dinner and games at the Highlander Clarion and she paid for it all as her celebration of life!

Private family memorial service will be at a later date.
